PHOENIX (August 3rd, 2021)- In early July, Nevada’s first Public Opinion Pulse survey, the NVPOP, collected premier data on the perceptions and opinions of Silver State residents regarding the Coronavirus and its vaccine. According to the poll conducted by OH Predictive Insights, at the time of the survey, the majority of Nevada adults (58%) report being vaccinated and another 13% are willing. Meanwhile, 22% are unwilling to take the vaccine and 7% are unsure.

The NVPOP is a statewide survey of Nevada residents that provides regular updates on the moods, perceptions, and opinions of Nevadans on hot topics facing the state. This NVPOP was conducted July 6th – July 11th, 2021 and surveyed 874 general population Nevadans (18+ YO) giving the survey a margin of error of +/- 3.3%.

Looking at concern over COVID-19, 41% of Nevadans are extremely or moderately concerned about the recent spread of the Coronavirus in the state while a statistically equivalent 39% are not at all or slightly concerned. One in five fall in the middle, reporting that they are somewhat concerned.

Nevadans are almost evenly split in their short-term optimism – or lack thereof – about the next 30 days in regard to COVID-19. One in three Nevadans (32%) expect the Coronavirus issue to remain about the same in the next 30 days while 37% expect the situation to get better and 30% expect it to worsen.

“The data shows that Nevadans are not overwhelmingly concentrated on either end of the spectrum of COVID concern or optimism for the future,” said Mike Noble, OHPI Chief of Research. “It will be interesting to watch the movement of COVID sentiment and vaccination status in Nevada as OHPI continues to track the public opinion of Silver State residents.”

When it comes to Nevadans' support or opposition of Nevada’s vaccine lottery, a plurality of residents (45%) support the monetary incentive while 26% oppose it and 29% have no opinion on the vaccine lottery.

Of the 42% of Nevada adults who did not report already taking the COVID-19 vaccine, the groups least willing to take it include residents living in Rural Nevada (30% would not take the vaccine), those aged 18-54 years old (27%), and non-white respondents (25% of Hispanic/Latinos and 27% of “Other” ethnicities).

However, after asking this group of unvaccinated Nevadans how the monetary incentive of Nevada’s vaccine lottery affects their decision whether to get the COVID-19 vaccine, most respondents (65%) said that the lottery has no effect on their decision. That being said, nearly one-quarter (23%) said the vaccine lottery makes them less likely to be vaccinated; only 12% said they are more likely to get the vaccine due to the lottery.

“While the share of Nevada adults who are vaccinated is high, the data shows that the state’s vaccine lottery may not produce the increase in vaccine willingness Nevada is hoping for,” said Mike Noble, OHPI Chief of Research. “In fact, the public opinion survey results show that the vaccine lottery may do more harm than good – almost twice as many unvaccinated respondents said the lottery makes them less likely to get the vaccine as those who said the lottery encourages them to get it.”
